THROWBACK THURSDAY 2 : Postcard Copic Portraits
Now, you might be thinking to yourself, 'what sort of a vague Throwback Thursday theme is THAT?' and you're certainly right to feel like it runs the risk of being not-so-very-cohesive. But let me tell you, even though these pieces were done almost entirely as commissions for a variety of clients, they altogether work as part of a larger miniseries of art pieces, created mostly between August of 2010 and December of 2012. You see, I had come back from a college trip to Japan with a package of hot pressed watercolour paper pre-cut to a postcard size, and I wanted to have some fun with it!
So, I began by taking commissions from some friends of mine who lived near me:

Above, we have OCs belonging to my friends Laci, Lacey, and Jonathan! I was already facing fun challenges to the limits of my Copic colour selection, and the limitations of what I knew how to render with marker alone - I mean, metallics? opalescent skin? BLONDE HAIR? So it was really nice to be able to work on pieces that, while certainly being legitimate commissions, would be going to my real-life friends and therefore, could stand to sit with me for at least long enough to be worked on until I was satisfied, without leaving a customer out there wondering what the hell I was doing.

When I made THIS piece as part of an art trade with my friend Cari, I decided that rather than sticking solely to Warm Greys for the colour wash and halftone-esque background patterning, I would stray where needed towards colour palattes that would better compliment the characters drawn!

Naturally, most of what people wanted to commission me to draw at first were OCs. There were some fanart pieces towards the beginning, of course, but in time the focus of these commissions shifted towards fanart - largely because, when I attended Nekocon one year, I posted commissions of this type for sale with an example piece featuring Gamzee Makara from Homestuck.

Then, naturally, came the Homestuck OCs, and the Homestuck fanart, which were GREAT FUN to create! ♥

QUICK ASIDE - you may have noticed that pieces created during this time reflect the fact that I had JUST gotten onto Tumblr for the first time! I only had the username 'zedabbling' for a hot minute before changing it, but it was unfortunately a hot minute when I was making a LOT of Homestuck fanart, so these pieces bear the scar of that time for all eternity.
IN ANY CASE - I had a LOT of fun making these, and in many cases I'm still pretty proud of how they turned out! I always enjoy working with Copic Markers, and I think that I would work with them MORE if I had a dedicated art table and good lights to work under. Maybe that's a goal for the future, aye?
SO, I leave you with a parting shot, featuring a fanart piece done on commission for an entirely different franchise:

So that concludes this installment of Throwback Thursday! If you have any questions about Copic markers, the techniques that I used to create these pieces, or what I did to achieve some of the effects you see here, please let me know in the comments! ♥
